Day Fifteen – July 2, 2018 – Lake Ridge, Virginia

Day Fifteen – July 2, 2018 – Lake Ridge, Virginia

Betsy and I promised each other that we’d wake the other in time to walk before the mercury rose above ninety!!  We’re up and out pretty darn early and the temperature is, well, not quite balmy!  But the path hasn’t changed and is still shady.  And today we find a doe relaxing in a little glen she’s located.  She watches us carefully but shows no signs of fear.  We meet some of the neighbors and some of their dogs and get home before I holler “Uncle!”.

Can't see much of the dam through the trees.

Roddy has had the last serving of chicken, so we go with coffee and English muffins.  It is so nice to just have a relaxing day with nothing much that has to be done.  Betsy and I go outside to water Kathy’s new dwarf mondo grass that has just been planted, and pull a few weeds.  I go out on the back deck and frustrated myself trying to shoot the tiny, and amazingly rapid little bluebirds.  And Kathy shows me were to look first thing in the morning for eagles!

I’m still hoping that I can get a blue bird photo.  The little buggers flit so quickly and seem to take pleasure in tantalizing me!  I spend enough time out on the back deck to be soaked again and finally give up.

We’re having bar-b-qued ribs for dinner and the three ladies work on putting them together in the crock pot.  While they are cooking Betsy and I take the car and go exploring.  We discover that Sandy Run Regional Park is only for racing boat crews.  There are lots of sculls but no people, and no hiking trails.  On the way back, we explore Historic Occoquan!  It was formally established in 1804, in Prince William County.  There are little shops and restaurants and a manor house that is available for weddings.  There is also a small waterfall and the river is dammed upstream, with large rocks providing perches for cormorants and great blue herons.

There's our dam!

When we get home, Kathy has already turned the ribs and we have some time to sit out on the porch with some rose and a book (or phone).  Soon it’s time to mix up the coleslaw and make the baked potatoes.  Then the sauce needs to be reduced and then it’s time for dinner!

The ribs are delicious!  Tender and flavorful!  And the baked potatoes and slaw are the perfect compliment!  After dinner, clean-up is a snap, with Dennis loading the dishwasher.  Most everything else was cleaned earlier.  We retire to the family room to watch the last episode of “Instinct” and “Midsummer Mysteries” before bed.  Baby and Twink retired at eight.  Steps – 10,099.

  1. The water looks nice and cool even if the thermometer says it hot. The meals and company sound nice.
